To secure that top placement in the search engines there are a few key elements for example, your site must have good design, proper key word density, intuitive navigation, correct Meta tags and informative content. Law firm sites often forget the impact of quality incoming links on the search engine rankings.

The leading search engine, Google, looks more at what other sites are linking to your site.  Google's page ranking system relies heavily on link popularity. Your site will be assigned a PageRank, the highest rank is 10 and the majority of quality sites rank at least 4 and above.

The logic is that pages other people think are valuable resources will often get linked by other webmasters, while pages that are of low quality or do not contain any information at all, will not gain many links.  Thus, the Top10 places will be filled with sites people regard as useful. Having just a few links from sites with applicable content can get you higher rankings than having 1,000 links from Free For All (FFA) links pages. It is true that placing non-themed links on your site can actually lower your search engine placement. Webmasters often get lackadaisical and join link swapping plans to have instant success. The result is that each members site has a link from everyone else.

Don't even try them, even if you are really desperate.  Here is what Google has to say about this practice: “Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that do not affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines. At least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive”.

The best way to select a quality linking partner is to see if their site is ranked within the top three pages of returned results for popular legal key word phrases. It also helps to search by your specific geographic area.
